Event Magic: Harry Potter Casts His Spell

Harry Potter is having a really great month, even for a world-famous wizard like himself. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” the final movie based on J. K. Rowling’s beloved series of bestselling novels, will be released this Friday, July 15th. Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe in the movies) also celebrates his golden birthday at the end of the month, turning 31 on the 31st. With no more books or movies to look forward to after this week, the celebrations honoring Harry Potter take on a special importance for lifelong fans: a way for them to hold on to this magical wizarding world a bit longer.

Chris’ Movie Review: Cars 2

I love movies. I love the movie theater. There’s little in this world I find more enjoyable than an early matinée that stretches into a double feature, each showing a fresh world where I can immerse myself in the intricacies of a character study, exploring the dynamic range of emotions that accompany a deftly crafted inner conflict. That, or watch stuff blow up.

There was a time when I could be found on any given night stumbling out of dark rooms, a buttered popcorn-colored aura surrounding me, my eyes narrowed by the fluorescent lights above. That time passed at the exact moment the first of my two children was born. But, a few years have gone by, and he is now chairman of the “Obsessed with Pixar” club. That’s great with me, because it gets me back in the game.

Given the above, we were super excited to see the newest iteration of Pixar’s magic, “Cars 2.” My boy was pumped, which got me pumped, and before you could say “Hans and Franz” (you’re welcome, over-30 crowd) we were at the theater, fruit snacks and popcorn in our respective hands. A short 30 minutes after the advertised start time and 372 renditions of “Daddy, is it starting yet?”, our show actually began

Food Festivals: Local Eats All Summer Long!

Hope everyone had a safe and happy July 4th! I spent much of my day standing in line, working on a really good sunburn, and eventually succumbing to Nashville’s brutally hot temps. For what, you ask? All for the sake of a very worthy food-related event: the third annual Hot Chicken Festival. The day is dedicated to spicy fried chicken, the try-it-if-you-dare delicacy that has rapidly become one of the city’s most iconic foods. Anyway, all that eating and sweating got me thinking about the many unique ways our great nation celebrates the things we eat. Read on to learn more about this summer’s food festivals and events!

of Montreal Tour Dates

The Athens, Georgia glam band of Montreal released a new video for “L’age D’or” and that’s as good a reason as any to highlight their current tour. Check out the video at the end, but be warned the song is sexy and the images in the vid are in tune with the song – in other words, I’m pretty sure there are some boobs in there there, so the result could be NSFW.

Going Against the Grain: Alternative Ways to Observe the Fourth

If you’re in the mood to change things up a little this Fourth of July, you are in luck my friend. There seems to be no shortage of “alternative” celebrations throughout the weekend leading up to the Fourth (which is on a Monday this year). While we’re not opposed to sparklers and parades and all things red, white and blue, we also think it is cool to do something unique. Explore the options in your town and check out a few of the unconventional events we’ve highlighted.

Jester’Z Improv Comedy in Scottsdale, AZ is hosting a hilarious two-night event in honor of Independence Day. All shows (running with the theme of patriotism and our great country) will be discounted so you can get your laughs on the cheap. Just be sure to mention the discount when reserving your tickets or otherwise they won’t honor it. All of the jokes are PG-rated, which means you can bring the whole family to a show.

We hear these goofballs are actually pretty funny

Happy Birthday America: Celebrate the Fourth of July the Good Ol’ Fashioned Way

Tradition rules this year’s patriotic celebrations on July Fourth. Around the country, folks are kickin’ it old school with fireworks, picnics and outdoor concerts to commemorate our country’s day of freedom. Because the Fourth falls on a Monday this year, many towns and organizations are partying all weekend long—we don’t see anyone complaining about that!

San Francisco boasts one of the most impressive fireworks shows in the country—we realize everyone thinks their show is the best, but we actually witnessed this one several summers ago, and it is crazy good. You and your family can catch the fireworks from any vista near the waterfront, but one of the most fun is Pier 39. With live music starting at noon and lasting into dusk, the Fourth of July Waterfront Celebration is the place to be in the Bay Area.

Phew! Adele Reschedules Summer 2011 Tour

We’re sure we speak for everyone when we say that we were more than a little bummed to hear that Adele was forced to cancel the remainder of her Summer 2011 tour due to illness. She was on the road after the release of her sophomore album, “21,” also known as the only thing my iTunes has been spinning for months now. But readers rejoice, this morning she revealed the new dates, scheduled for August and October. She’s even added some new shows. Review the list after the jump!
